Description: During the prosperous period of the Kiurikian dynasty (10th to 13th centuries), these two Byzantine monasteries were the nucleus of learning in the Tumanian region. Sanahin was of well-known because of its prestigious school of illuminators and calligraphers. Representing the highest advancement of Armenian religious architecture, the unique style of these two monastic complexes evolved from an integration of elements of Byzantine ecclesiastical architecture and the traditional vernacular architecture of the Caucasian region. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
