Description: The historic town of Samarkand has been the intersection and melting pot of the world's cultures. Founded as ancient Afrasiab in the 7th century B.C., Samarkand underwent its most momentous growth during the Timurid period (14th-15th centuries). The chief monuments consist of the Registan Mosque and madrasas, Bibi-Khanum Mosque, the Shakhi-Zinda complex and the Gur-Emir ensemble, in addition to Ulugh-Beg's Observatory. --WHMNet paraphrase from the description at WHC Site, where additional information is available.
